Brushing and Flossing
|
| A quick once-over with your toothbrush
isn't the answer to oral hygiene or to keeping that beautiful
smile! Proper brushing and flossing is actually your first line
of defense against tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss.
Dr. Kane is ready to help you learn the correct brushing procedure
but first, you must have the proper tools. |
|
- A toothbrush with a small head is best to use. Bristles
should be soft and rounded. Replace your toothbrush every
two months.
- Use fluoride toothpaste that has been approved by the
American Dental Association.
- Tilt the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward your gums.
Use small, circular motions to clean each tooth's surface,
front and back.
- Brush your tongue to remove bacteria.
- If you are unable to brush after every meal, brush at
least twice a day. Always brush your teeth at bedtime

BRUSHING: Brushing your teeth should be a part of
your daily routine. Each tooth's surface should be brushed,
front, back and top. Hold the brush with the bristles next
to your teeth, close to the gumline. Tilt the brush till the
bristles are at a 45-degree angle with the teeth.
There is no need to push your brush into your teeth. Simply
use enough pressure to make the bristles splay out slightly
and move your toothbrush back and forth in short strokes.
Finish by brushing your tongue and rinse your mouth thoroughly.

FLOSSING: Brushing doesn't reach some areas
of your teeth and only by flossing can you rid your teeth of
plaque. Choose the type of floss you are most comfortable with
whether it is waxed or unwaxed, flat or round.
Hold the floss tightly and guide the floss between your teeth
using a gentle rubbing motion. At the gumline, curve the floss
against one tooth and gently slide it into place between the
gum and tooth. While holding the floss tightly against the tooth,
rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum
with gentle up and down motions. Repeat this procedure until
every tooth has been flossed. Don't forget the back side of
your last tooth. Rinse your mouth thoroughly.
Brushing and flossing your teeth are important in your fight
against tooth decay and gum disease. Eating a balanced diet
and limiting the number of between-meal snacks will also help
you have healthy teeth and a nice smile. Regular visits to Dr.
Kane's office are also invaluable. If you have any questions,
